The BIG NEWS is the discovery of HUNDREDS of ancient earthworks in the midst of the Amazon. Researchers believe the rainforest was transformed over 2 kya by ancient people who built hundreds of large and mysterious earthworks. This news via the University of Exeter this week.

Working together researchers from Brazil and the UK discovered the earthworks and believe ancient people lived in the rainforest long before the coming of the Europeans. They appear to be mounds surrounded by ditches and have been concealed for centuries by the trees. Modern deforestation in the Amazon lead to their discovery. Reportedly there are more than 450 of these geoglyphs and that’s a lot to say the least!
At this point researches do not know what these places were used for by ancient people but they say that it is doubtful they were villages. They have recovered very few artifacts since their discovery. They may have been used periodically “as ritual gathering places” [how did I know that catchall conclusion was coming?].
The structures are each surrounded by a ditch and their mere discovery challenges the long held assumption that the rainforest was untouched by humans before the arrival of the Spanish and Portuguese. The researchers have also found that ancient humans heavily altered bamboo forests for millennia and small clearing were made to build the structures. Although these ancient people were clearing parts of the rainforest they were doing so nowhere on the scale that we are today.
And so once again we find that what we thought, was, and what we thought was not, indeed WAS! Some have compared the geoglyphs to Stonehenge and the mounds with ditches certainly do resemble structures found at and around Stonehenge. However, the Amazon site shows no signs of stones large or small unlike Stonehenge.
So what were these structures used for by ancient people? Portable housing? Religion and ritual? Or some type of farming or fortress? Very interesting find and if they turn out to be anything like Stonehenge then that will raise a host of new questions that MUST be answered because they just might indicate an ancient GLOBAL civilization of some kind!!
And the number of these is startling additionally!

3/2/2017 Science Daily report:
“We often think of the Amazon rainforest as a vast expanse of nature untouched by humans. But a new study suggests that’s not true. In fact, today’s rainforest is shaped by trees that were cultivated by indigenous peoples thousands of years ago….”
This study suggests that some of the tree species we find in the Amazon rainforest today may be common because they were planted and cultivated by ancient people long before the arrival of the Europeans. This according to research conducted by Chicago’s Field Museum under the direction of Nigel Pitman, Ecologist.
So it appears indigenous people in the region have been tree farming for a very long time perhaps even for longer than we suspect.
