The Greenland Shark is the real “old man of the sea” and a very interesting creature. It lives up to 400 years! Read that again….400 years! That is amazing and that also makes it the oldest living vertebrae on the planet. Some of these sharks living today were born back in the 1700’s and now scientists are studying them trying to determine what makes them lives so long.
Also known as the Gray Shark and the Gurry Shark it is one of the largest shark species on Earth. They can grow to 21 feet and weigh over 2000 lbs. Some grow to 24 feet and weigh over 3000 lbs. Ironically, males are smaller than females! It lives in the cold waters of the North Atlantic and isn’t sexually mature until about age 150. In fact, they can’t produce young until that age!
These sharks are one of the amazing animals on the planet and they look like something out of prehistory. What astounds me more than anything is their ability to live to about 400 years!
