We humans are sexual creatures. Let’s face it. We like SEX! We not only like to engage in sex for purposes or reproduction but we also like sex just for pleasure. And some people are so enthralled with sex that they’ll actually have sex with anything!
And that brings me to my point 🙂
In terms of Primatology the Bonobo is a chimp that is most like humans. We actually have a lot in common with them. Bonobos are also very sexual creatures! In fact, they engage in sex not only for pleasure and reproduction but also to settle conflicts and other things! So did humans interbreed with an ancestor of the Bonobo Chimp long, long ago? Could that explain human’s and bonobo’s obsession with sex? Hmmm….maybe.
It has taken mainstream evolutionists a long time to accept the notion that ancient human ancestors interbreed with other hominids and sometimes they retrobred (think back-breeding). Once we envisioned human evolution as a tree with a common trunk and many branches and then a ladder by which each rung represented progress (an evolutionary step forward) of the human species. But as new evidence was discovered that “evolutionary tree” quickly became a twisted bush and a VERY twisted bush at that! Recently we have envisioned our evolution as a many branched stream or, more recently, a “network.” However, as evidence mounts that bush, stream, network, or however you choose to envision it is becoming more and more tangled and webbed.
In thinking along these lines I recalled the theory but forth by anthropologist Dr. Susan Martinez in her book entitled “The Mysterious Origins of Hybrid Man” in which she postulates that there is no evolution but that man is the product of long-term interbreeding and retrobreeding. She believes that the various ancient human ancestors we see did NOT evolve from anything but, rather, that they were created just as they were and interbred with other ancient hominid species. So, in essence the “Martinez Hybrid Theory” is that modern humans (H. sapiens) are the product NOT of evolution but of interbreeding and retrobreeding. Thus, Homo sapiens are HYBRIDS!
Martinez’s theory could be more correct than perhaps some of us wish to believe as there is a lot of growing evidence pointing this (her) direction!
Consider Homo sapiens (modern humans). We know that most non-African humans have about 4% DNA from Neanderthals. We know that SOME humans (ie: SE Asians) have Denisovan genes. We know that we have Cro-Magnon genes (archaic H. sapiens) and some of us have genes from H. heidelbergensis. And, most likely, we also have genes from H. erectus and perhaps even from “Handyman” aka Homo habilis. And there are a host of others no doubt. So how could we have evolved from so many ancient ancestors?
The standard concept when it comes to the Theory of Evolution is that one species evolved into a new and improved species over millions of years and the old species went extinct as a result. But, the evidence we find says something different! In fact, it’s beginning to look like our concept of human evolution is flawed and that INTERBREEDING was the primary force behind the formation of modern humans! And that proves Martinez right!!
Don’t get me wrong. I do NOT agree with everything Dr Martinez postulates but her theory has merit AND a growing body of evidence so it deserves consideration.
So basically what this means is that we Homo sapiens did NOT evolve from anything. We didn’t evolve from apes, chimps, or gorillas BUT we apparently DID interbreed with them….or at least SOME of our ancient human ancestors did (think retrobreeding). That explains why we find ancient human fossil remains in species like H. erectus that are the reverse of what we’d expect. Later H. erectus seems to have De-evolved! In early H. erectus we find very little browridge and other archaic features but in later H. erectus we find a host of archaic features and that means only ONE explanation. Later H. erectus engaged in retrobreeding with some archaic species quite possibly H. Ardipithecus or H. Australopithecus. And, to go further, it’s even possible they interbred with Paranthropus! There is no other way to explain the archaic features we find in later H. erectus.
I’ve long thought that Ardipithecus is most likely the ancient common ancestor of humans, apes, gorillas, and chimps. I’ve long suspected as well that Australopithecus was likely the ancient ancestor of chimpanzees and that Paranthropus was the ancient ancestor of apes and gorillas. According to Martinez humans stem from Australopithecus the ancient ancestor of chimpanzees which included the very sexual bonobos. We know that there must have been a divergence somewhere along the chimp line as they have 24 chromosomes and we have 23 with Human Chromosome 2 being fused and basically proving why we share 99% of our DNA with chimps (including bonobos). Thus the common human-chimp ancestor would be Australopithecus just as Martinez postulates.
We humans (and our ancient ancestors) have always been sexual creatures just like bonobos and their ancient ancestors! But, what else would we expect in light of the fact that bonobos and humans are highly similar?
Martinez and the Hybrid Theory are very interesting and there IS evidence for such and that evidence seems to be mounting. Human evolution has never been linear and we have long known that to be the case. We know that there were human advancements (evolution = progress) but we also have long known from fossil evidence that there has also been de-evolution! Only interbreeding can explain this.
So in summary, the Hybrid Theory postulates that there is no evolution in terms of one species evolving from another more archaic species with that later species going extinct. Rather, it postulates that modern humans are the result of interbreeding sometimes with more evolved species and sometimes with more archaic species of ancient hominids. So modern humans, Homo sapiens, are HYBRIDS! Frankly, that makes more sense to me than the standard theory of evolution! And it also explains ALL of the “anomalies” we find in the human fossil record that we term “mysterious” but, in fact, turn out NOT to be mysterious at all.
One final thought, if Martinez and the Hybrid Theory are correct and that ancient hominids did not evolve from anything but have always been here then that adds strong evidence to the Multiregional Theory and shoots down the Out-of-Africa (Replacement) Theory.
