Tombstone, Arizona! The town too tough to die. The place where the famous Gunfight at the OK Corral took place and the place where giant figures like Doc Holiday and Wyatt Earp resided for a time. There’s a place in Tombstone called Big Nose Kate’s Saloon which was formerly the Grand Hotel. Down in the basement lived a hermit who was digging tunnels looking for silver. He was a strange man and it’s said he never left the place.
Recently I watched an episode of “Ghost Adventures” and they had returned to Tombstone for a second time. You can find the episode on YouTube. Ghosts in Tombstone isn’t what caught my attention. What did catch my attention is the part where the crew is filming in the basement of the Saloon and sitting on a shelf is a rather odd human skull. It doesn’t look like that of a modern human, Homo sapien, but it looks like it might be the skull of some prehistoric species that the hermit dug out of the ground during his search for silver. The show gives no explanation for the skull but they do say everything in the basement or shaft remains the same as it was in the hermit lived there.
The skull seems to have a rather heavy jaw bone and a protruding brow ridge. It also appears to have a bit of a sagittal crest. You can see the skull at about the 13:00 marker on the video. Apparently, people are not allowed to go down into the shaft but I’m going to see what I can do about getting permission to see the skull and examine it as to me it appears as a non-homo sapien skull.
I could be wrong and it may be a Homo sapien skull but I won’t know until I actually examine it if given the opportunity. Question is what is it doing on the shelf in the hermits quarters down in the shaft? Did he dig it up from one of his tunnels? If it isn’t a modern human skull and if it is a prehistoric species skull then this skull is one big piece of evidence that non-modern human ancestors dwelled in the Americas and that changes everything we think we know about the extend of proto-humans distribution because mainstream theory is that ancient human ancestors existed just about everywhere EXCEPT the Americas!
On first look the skull appears to resemble that of the Red Deer Cave People who were a species of proto-human living in China in prehistoric times. It has been theorized that these people were the offspring of breeding between the Denisovans and Homo sapiens. A minority of scientists believe they are a distinct species as yet unidentified. The Red Deer Cave People had thick skull bones, prominent brow ridges, large molars, broad noses, and jutting jaws with no chins. Fossil remains date between 14,500 — 11,500 years ago. Their fossil remains have been discovered at Red Deer Cave and Longlin Cave in China. They had a mix of archaic and modern features. Their primary food was the Asian Red Deer. However, the skulls of the Red Deer Cave People do not show a sagittal ridge as the skull in Tombstone appears to show. In fact, one of the telling marks of Homo erectus was a sagittal ridge as it was with Homo habilis.
So what are we seeing in this episode of “Ghost Adventures”? A modern human skull or the fossil skull of some proto-human species such as H. habilis or H. erectus or maybe even a Neanderthal? At this point we don’t know but if I get the ok I’m willing to go to Tombstone and have a look at this skull. I’ll let you know how this turns out in a future post.
